To wrap this up (hopefully!):
1. I went online chat with Dell Tech Support. Since Norton was an OEM install by Dell I thought I'd better get them on the hook in case the operating system crashed.
2. The Dell Tech was going to use the Control Panel Uninstall but I told her that Norton had its own software for that. She found the same page that Creeping Death provided and we used that software.
3. Looks like all the Norton crap is gone. Everything but the desktop shortcut. Hope this works. I will download the free AVG software tomorrow after installing my router.
Thanks again y'all!!!!!!!
Seems like more than half the computers I come across with major perfomance or connectivity issues, it's something to do with Norton. Norton removal tool is only Norton software I recomend. What happened to that company? Also if you have a computer where you tried to remove Sytem Works, you have to also remember to disable GoBack or the sytem will bluescreen when you try to reboot after using the removal tool.
Norton is famous for breaing during install or uninstall and then never again being able to fix the problem. It's a giant piece of bloatware.
I have had good luck using the Norton uninstall tool they have now. I found it on their site and carry it around on my keychain. I haven't had a nightmare Norton uninstall since.
I hate Symantec. It makes me want to cry that they bought Veritas. I'm just waiting for them to screw up Backup Exec beyond recognition.
This is also the time of year that most electronics stores have AVG, Norton, McAfee, etc. free after rebate. I just recently bought Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, Spy Sweeper, Word Perfect X3 and several other programs for free. Fry's and the office stores (Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, etc.) often have these listed in their Sunday ads during the holiday shopping season.
Had to do a bit of hunting to find the completely free version of the ATG software.
C/Net has it: http://www.cnet.com/2001-1_1.html
AVG freakin rules. That and Openoffice.org should be standard on every computer.
