Thread: Norton was preventing my internet connection!

Well, Norton does it again.

1. It's that time of year for Norton to periodically send me reminders that it is time for me to renew my Norton software ($50.00 or what ever it is).

2. I turned on my PC this morning (running MS Windows XP Home) and could not get any connection (Google, LGK, etc) and could not retreive my email. Got "Could not connect to server" error.

3. From Control Panel I opened Network Connections which showed I was indeed connected at my usual speed of 100 Mbps.

4. Called Verizon Tech Support (my IP) and we ran ipconfig and pinged Google and Yahoo and could get no response.

5. Major Props to this Tech who asked if I was running Norton. We then disabled it for 1 hour and bingo. I could connect again. Norton was blocking ALL websites.

6. I opened Norton and set it from Running at Start Up to Manual, effectively turning it off for good.

7. I really don't feel like calling Norton Tech right now to troubleshoot. I might later.

Uninstall Norton and try AVG Free addition. It's just as good as Norton and......well......it's free.

Not to mention Norton is such a system whore.

Uninstalling Norton is a big risk.

I'm just going to leave it turned off and get the AVG software. Have heard nothing but good things about it.

I would uninstall Norton and install AVG ASAP. If you use it as a firewall as well, I would suggest using that $50 you were gonna spend renewing Norton, and buy a router/firewall. If you have a router/firewall already, just install AVG and you will be fine.

No doubt about it. Get Norton off of your system! if you've got to, I'd even go so far as to suggest a reinstall of XP.

Norton sucks. AVG Free rules.

Had the same problem with Norton and it kept coming back. I eventually took it completely off. It's like I have a brand new computer without Norton making everything slow and impossible.

I'm really not sure if I want to try uninstalling the Norton piece of crap.

I tried it a few years back and, iirc, it crashed the whole system.

Thinking about calling Norton Tech support and having them on the line when I do the uninstall...but still, even if the system crashes they'll blame it on something else.

Currently, I have Norton set to manual start.

I shut off the PC and then powered it back on and luckily the manual start command remained in effect.

Did you just uninstall it using Control Panel?
