Personally I only buy an extended warranty on supper high priced items like tv's

Extended warranty on a laptop is always a good idea.

How much does it cost to replace a hard drive? How much is the warranty?

I havent bought as of yet....waiting to see if I can get a better deal. Extended warranty was $200 from office depot.

Is that an "everything goes" type warranty? It's okay if it includes accidental things like spills and drops. Still, at that price, to pay roughly 30% of the purchase price is steep. Laptops are getting to the almost disposable price area these days.

Skip the warranty/ There should be at least a 1 yrs manufacturer warranty, and if it doesn't fail by then you'll be ok.

I don't know if you are set on the HP but I came across this laptop today. It is a Gateway and it is an editor's choice at cnet.com. This laptop is comparable to the HP but has a bigger hard drive (500GB) at a price of $599 at Best Buy.

Stay away from Gateway. They have been going through some restructuring once they went bankrupt, and Ive been unable to get tech support on some of their products because of it.

I would stay away from office depot's warranty and check with HP to see if you can purchase an extended warranty directly from them. After year 2, there generally seems to be some kind of hardware issue that pops up.
