Or are you seriously telling me that nothing EVER goes wrong with Linux?

Yes it is true that no OS is perfect but Linux does have the lowest downtime ratio. But in all fairness more than half of those bug fixes are nothing that will bring your system down. and the rest of them you as a desktop user would most likely never use.

But all Operating systems come across bugs. Mac OS have bugs just as Windows has bugs and so does Linux. Just like Mac and Windows Linux also has an update manager and once bugs are fixed the update manager will download then and install them. and most bugs in Linux are fixed fairly quickly. There are exceptions to the rule but that is the same with the other OS's.

Regardless of the OS, a first release will always have incompatibility issues. It's a rule of the game.

So, DRice, downgrade to Leopard until the kinks are worked out. I've read 10.6.1 is coming very soon and it should handle printer issues that many have complained about in the past week or so.

So in defense of your "it just works" rant, I still believe that Mac does provide that experience, given that you realize the risk you run when installing a week old OS upgrade.

But it turns out it's not me. Apparently Snow Leopard makes this printer unusable via wifi or ethernet. I upgraded my iMac to SL and it doesn't work. I didn't upgrade my wifes MacBook and it works fantastically! Some googling turned up that except for the people that prayed to the correct computer gods most everyone is having this same problem. Sigh. Back to my 'why don't they make **** that just works' rant.

We told you to not install SL yet, because there were bound to be bugs that haven't been worked out yet. It happens in the first version of almost every OS upgrade. I still haven't even ordered SL, much less installed it. I won't either, until the SL.1 version comes out.

... for the record, I have a Photosmart C8180 that prints from all of my computers (4) and my iPhone wirelessly, and setting it up was a breeze.

I've always owned PCs. My wife went out and spent $2500 on an iMac 24. It was different, and it seemed to be different only for the sake of being different. While I'm no computer guy, I've been able to ascertain this: It's left brain vs. right brain. If you are doing artsy fartsy stuff, buy a Mac. If you're planning on using it as a business machine, buy a PC. Personally, I'm a business guy, and don't have time to trick a Mac into doing what I want it to do. Now, if I did graphic design, I would likely be singing a different tune.

Oh yeah, we sold the Mac after 6 months at a $1,000 loss after finding that it wouldn't communicate with our laser printers. Fortunately, we were able to get a bangin' Dell notebook for $800, and have had no problems since.

As for me and my home, we will purchase PC.
As I was reading this thread again, I was just thinking... wouldn't it have been cheaper to just install windows on the imac, instead of eating $1000? Unless, of course, you wanted a laptop instead. Then m solution would be irrelevant. I know Windows OSes are more expensive than Mac, but I bet they are not $1000 more.

    just thinking out loud....

Well, thanks for rubbing that in

Luckily I only installed 10.6 on my machine, not my wife's. It installed flawlessly on her Macbook Pro. This printer actually kicks ***, does everything it was advertised to do and I can't wait for Canon to get the networking bugs worked out in SL. Until then I guess I'll drape a long USB cord across the room. I'm just relieved it wasn't something I was doing! I was going crazy!

Oh and thanks all for putting up with me. Sometimes I just need to vent. And what better place than here??

Try disabling SNMP on the printer driver and see if it works.
And thats how you get ants!
