Because someone or a group of someone's spent time developing something to make your life easier or more enjoyable on the computer. If you pirate it then you are stealing from that person or group plain and simple. Oh, and by the way, it is against Federal and copyright laws.

Which is exactly why I take offense to being included in that group of "taking what they want when they want it."

Don't get the MS 2007 Office. 2003 version is better, faster, more stable. It's tested. Google for it, people can't believe how bad MS Office 2007 is.

If it's something worth buying, I usually end up buying it. I simply tack on my own "No payments or interest until September!" deal.

You said you were going back to school, if you have a valid .edu e-mail address you can get Office Ultimate 2007 for $59.95, of course I think that's for Windows only. I saw this link in the OC Register.

You can find iWork for cheap on ebay. Pages is a decent prog. Go that route.

Office '04 is slower on Leopard for some reason.

You should be able to get an educational discount from Apple direct for all of it bundled.
at the draft party a couple of years ago, and under a considerable haze, i heard Birdman yell out the following (about 4 or 5 times, i think) - "don't marry yourselves to players!" he went on to reiterate that idea more than once on the boards, and i believe it to be absolutely sage.
