The optimum upgrade I posted the following in another thread and thought it might be a good topic on its own.
I have all old crap that's begging to be upgraded.
Old phone, old computer, old TV.
I wonder what the optimum combo of new stuff would be?
I can afford an upgrade to all new stuff.
Would appreciate any input.
I have heard and read that the Pioneer Kuro is a really good tv. For some reason it is being discontinued in the spring so you may get a good deal on it. If I was looking at a tv, I would very seriously consider this one but I don't need one right now.

Ok Bogey. I have a couple of questions for you.
What size tv are you looking for? Price range?
What type of computer are you looking for? (mac or pc) (laptop or desktop) Price range?
What network do you want your cell phone to be on? Price range?
The KURO is a GREAT tv but Pioneer got out of the plasma business. If you can find one (and its in your price range), I'd get one. If not, Panasonic makes a great Plasma too. Personally, I've always preferred Plasma to LCD, although the new LED tvs from Samsung look pretty damn good too.Originally Posted by kaos

I like the idea of mobility and lack of clutter now, so I'm thinking laptop.

I want to stick with Verizon.
I know that the iPhone may be available to Verizon users in June.
In the meantime, I'd like to grab something from craigslist cheap to tide me over.
As far as TV's go, I'd go with a Panasonic Plasma. My dad has one and its FANTASTIC (his is over two years old too and it still looks better than some of the newer tvs on the market).
I'd go with something like this:

That's a 46" but you can get a 42" if you want to save a little money or upgrade to the 50" or 58" if you want something bigger.
For around a 1000 bucks I don't think you can do better.
As far as computers go, I'm a huge Apple fan. I like the OS. If you want to go the mac route, any of the new Mac laptops will edit video (the pros will be better but the basic mac laptops will still get the job done). I'd just look on Apple's website and find the price/ performance ratio that works for your budget.
If you wanted to get a windows pc, I'd ask some of the other knowledgeable posters on here and I'm a bit out of the loop on who makes the pc's.
As far as phones go, I love my iPhone, but if you wanted to stick with Verizon (and if Apple ends up not releasing the iPhone on verizon), I've heard that Motorola's DROID phone is actually pretty good. I played around with it a little a few weeks ago and I though that it was a good alternative to the iPhone.
The best tech upgrade you can make in your life are:
Cellphone
Computer Monitor
Computer
Television
These are listed in alphabetical order, and not their rank. If you use one more than another, upgrade that. Beware of the computer/computer monitor upgrade, one will lead to the other.

I bought the 50 inch version of that plasma, it is an excellent television. $1299 right now at Bestbuy.
I also have a 46-inch Pioneer plasma with an Aurora Multimedia video card in my bedroom.
Pioneer has better colors, Panasonic has deeper black levels.
Bogey, I'll be at the LGK midnight skate if you have any questions about that specific plasma. Televisions are like artwork. Everyone has their own preference. What looks like ass to you might look great to someone else, and vice versa. When you are in a store looking at tellys, make sure you change the setting from Vivid to something more normal. This gives you a much more accurate idea of what the picture will look like.
Regarding computers, do yo have any tech-savvy friends? They could help you build one helluva desktop PC for much less than a pre-packaged Dell or similar POS. Not sure about editing on notebooks. My wife and I have 2 macbooks and I wouldn't even dare try to capture HD video or edit on them...
