    Default PC Help (New Build)

I just built a budget XP system for Mom and I'm having a small issue with it.

Installed in the case are two identical SATA hard drives. Both are seen by the BIOS as well as the Windows Device Manager. BUT I can only see one hard drive in the Window's MY COMPUTER function (C. The one that's visible is the one where Windows installed itself.

How can I get the second one to show up?

    Install linux...

Seriously though, it's been quite a while since I've done anything disk related to a windows system. Does fdisk still exist? If so, does it see the second disk there?

What does it look like in Device Manager (oops, Disk Mangler!!!!!)?

    Does it have a partition?

Does it have a drive letter?

In Device Manager it looks exactly like the other disk drive, which makes it tough to distinguish between the two. The only way I can tell is that there is no option to disable the drive that has the Windows installation on it.

It doesn't have a partition that I'm aware of.

It doesn't have a drive letter that I know of. I imagine the computer automatically D: to it?
Since it's a new OEM drive, it probably just needs a format. Windows Setup didn't give me an option to format the second disk drive.

Is there a way to do it from the command prompt?

Go to the Control Panel & open "Administrative Tools"

    From there, open "Computer Management"

Under "Storage" you'll find "Disk Management". Open that.

Click on the second disk (usually labeled disk 1) and create an extended partition on the whole drive.

Now create a logical drive & format it.

    Then it should show up.

Do what pshychopuck said. I have to do the exact same thing with every new build that has multiple drives not on RAID.

Yah I've got the old system sitting around here now. Its in my entertainment cabinet, but isn't really hooked into anything significant. The XBR Wega doesn't display it well, so it'll sit there waiting until I get an HD set with a DVD-I input. I've toyed around with the thought of installing Linux just to see what its like. But quite honestly, XP has been nearly bullet-proof for me. So I'll probably stick with it.
