Default Phototrip 2008! Red Bull Air Races!!

Sam (ValleyFan) and I did this last September, and I thought some more folks might be into it this year. It was a tiring day spent almost completely on our feet, but I thought it was fun. We got some great images, and I think with what I've learned this last few months that the next time I go watch one of these things that my images will be even better.

Red Bull Air Race World Series will be down in San Diego on the 3rd and 4th of May (Sat/Sun). I was thinking of traveling down again to photograph the event. I'd be interested in going down on qualifying day (Saturday) and finding a place on the West side of the San Diego Bay to try and shoot from.

I've got three seats in my truck that will be traveling down to San Diego empty unless anyone decides they want to fill them and pitch in a couple bucks to help pay for gas. We'd have to leave wicked early in the morning.

I'll have to do some research about where to shoot from opposite the Embarcadero park where we were last year. Where we stood in September, the sun was in our faces (and our lenses) the entire day. (By finding a place on the opposite side of the bay, we'd have the sun at our backs and the tall buildings of the city in the background of our pictures.) The only officially ticketed viewing locations are on the Embarcadero, so I won't know for a few weeks exactly how much it will cost.

Anyhow, if anyone's interested, let me know.

That sounds like fun! We'd have to drive on our own though since we have a crazy 2 year old boy.
This might be too much stimuli for him though.

it would be a really long day for a two year old. the entire Embarcadero and both sides of the bay are packed. Parking is a general nightmare and in order to get any type of decent view of the race, you should make sure to buy your tickets asap. With that said, if you make it a weekend trip, try to get a nearby hotel room you can take refuge in, I know many a toddler boy who have had the best time ever watching those planes!!!

I'm thinking SDG&E Park or Centennial Park will be best. I wonder what time we'd have to leave to get good shooting locations in those spots? I think I'll call the City of Coronado to find out about all that.

Yeah. It might be time to rent the 600mm f/4. Then again, the 70-200mm with the 2x teleconverter on it worked pretty darned well last time.

One thing's for darned sure. This time I'm NOT going without a monopod!

Do not drive, take the train. There is a train station right next to Petco.

That'd be fine if you wanted to view from the Embarcadero.
