One other con, if for some reason Verizon, or probably any other carrier for that matter discovers you are using wifi tether and not paying for it, or that your phone is rooted, they can if they choose, cancel your account.

Oh and not to be a post padder lol, but you can change your lock screen, or even turn it off with non rooted phones I.E. Widget locker and No Lock. So rooting your phone isn't necessary for this purpose.
Here are a few screens of mine.
Droid X
ROM: Liberty 1.0

I just rooted my Droid 2 Global, I'm not exactly sure what I should do now. I know there was a link posted earlier in the thread explaining everything, but I would rather ask here... I want to know what roms are. Are those what you use to customize your phone? Are there other roms that allow you to do other things?
It's safe to say all the ROMs out right now will have all the bloat that comes with the phone uninstalled. Most also remove the blur making your phone run smoother. You can also see an improvement with battery life as some ROMs are under volted, plus better performance with over clocking.
Other then that it's all eye candy as every ROM makes your phone UI look and act different.
I hate the bloat on there, as well as the blur crap. I would love to remove or hide it, I just hope the process to undo it isn't difficult in case I need to bring my phone into Verizon at some point. That probably won't happen, but you never know. I think I will mess with roms tomorrow, which ones are the best in your opinion?
Remember to create a nandroid backup before your flash ANYTHING!!!
Make sure you have a little program called RSD lite. Latest version is 4.9 i think. Do some searching on the android forums for a full "SBF" of the current stock ROM that your phone comes with. This way if you have to bring your phone back to verizon or if you mess up something by installing a ROM, you can SBF it to stock. Simply hitting factory reset on your phone won't work.
And yes, by all means, back up your phone before installing any ROM.
As for the best? It's really users choice. The hot one right now for the Droid X is Liberty 1.5 .
