Rooted/Jailbroken Mobile Device Thread

So, I decided to start this thread because I know there are people here that are, or have heavily considered Jailbreaking their iPhone/iPod, or Rooting their Android Phone. I'm not an expert on this, and I'm not going to claim to have all the answers. But I wanted to start a thread where people can come and post their questions and concerns about the process. And hopefully some of us that have already gone through the process can provide some help. There are places online that offer step-by step guides, and every other resource that can help you get your device rooted/jailbroken.

The best place to go, in my opinion, is XDA Developers Android Forums & Windows Phone Discussion @ xda-developers They seem to have everything you need for iPhone, Android, and Windows Mobile.

There are plenty of people that are happy having a stock phone. Rooting/Jailbreaking isn't for everyone.

But doing so allows people to customize their device the way they want it. Not because they're unhappy, but because they want to personalize it. They want to take advantage of what their phone is truely capable of.

Those are the only cons as far as I know. If there are others, please let me know.

Pros

Ability to use wireless tether app for free
Ability to block adds from apps and internet
Abilty to underclock your phone's CPU which saves battery life
Ability to overclock your phone's CPU which increases your phone's speed

With Android, once you root your phone, you're able to download and install a customized rom which will alter your phone's appreance and performance. These roms are constantly updated to ensure they are up current with the latest updates that non-rooted phones receive from their carriers (Sprint/Verizon/ etc.) You can add 'Themes' to these roms to further change the appearance of the rom, if you'd like.

Also, if you see a new rom that you want to try out but really like the way your phone is set up, you can make a nandroid backup. This backup will allow you to return your phone back to the way it was before you made changes to it.

You can also change the lockscreen of your phone. HTC has a pulldown lockbar by default. With a rooted phone, you can choose to change that lockbar to a standard or customized Android lockscreen, such as the one I posted.

Another thing, is that you can remove, or freeze all or some of the apps that come pre-installed on your phone. Most custom roms come with these apps removed, but are available for installation if you really want to use them.

if you're worries about the Warranty of your phone being voided, you can always un-root/un-jailbreak your phone back to stock without evidence of ever hacking your phone.

I didn't post anything for Jailbreaking iPhones as I don't have one. Anyone with a Jailbroken iPhone is more than welcome to post their opinions as to why people should or shouldn't do it.


With that said, I'd like to see how everyone else has their phone setup. Device name, root/jailbrake method, roms, kernels, themes, wallpapers, splash screens, etc.

root method: unrEVOked Forever
Rom: MikFroyo 4.4 - White Theme
Kernel: netarchy-toastmod-4.3.2-cfs-nosbc-havs-more

Watch out when you root your EVO if you have gone through all of the updates. Sprint or HTC updated their Hboot so if you're using the old method it won't work. I miss my rooted phone.

Rooting also allows you to do a variety of different things to the appearance of your phone. i changed themes and icons and boot screens and other stuff that i dont think you can do without root.

With a rooted phone you can uninstall all the unwanted bloat that comes with the phone.

You can also overclock(which i won't mess with) or undervolt your phone which will increase your battery life and improve performance.
