Thread: Setting Up a Home Server

I was thinking about setting up a home server and hooking it up to my large TV and use it for watching stuff from the web and also to rip my home collection of Blue Ray and movies. I can get the software for cheap from a relative that works at MS. Can anyone point me in the right direction for this. Can I take a regular PC and just install Home Server on it or should I buy a system designed for it. I want to have all my home computer back up to it and I understand that the new version is pretty simple and automatic. I am kind of limited on shelf space so the system needs to be less than 8-10" thick.

My suggestion would be to build a Mini-ITX workstation in a home theater PC (HTPC) case. You would be looking at close to $500 for the computer and case. The only things to look out for is to get at least 4GB of RAM and you would probably want to add 2 x 2TB hard drives, which will drive the price up. Also make sure to get a decent bluetooth keyboard/mouse that will work comfortably from the couch. Let me know when you are ready to move forward on this and I can give you a hand.

Also, since you have your xbox 360, you could setup the PC in a closet, and use the xbox to access your media library. I do this with my PS3 on my TV and use my Windows 7 workstation to host the files. As long as you hard wire it, it works great. DO NOT USE WIRELESS!

CD, You will have to bring a chisel to open Homer's pockets to pay for a workstation. I ve taken Mr Simps to many hockey games in my lifetime and I couldnt even get a simple Bud Light.
