    what are you talking about?
You can't look at a PS3 strictly from a gaming standpoint. If all you're caring about is games, and you agree, there aren't any for the PS3 yet, then why consider it?

If you want a PS3 for playing Blu-ray titles, and the eventual decent+ PS3 games that will come down the line, then it's a good choice.

dgrycan and I have both had PS3s for some time, mostly for watching Blu-ray movies. We haven't talked about it in a while, but judging by his post in this thread, he and I both love our PS3s for exactly that: watching HD movies in glorious 1080p. THAT'S worth $399.

This is a bit disappointing though, because I was reading that the latest firmware upconverts DVD, PS2, and PS1 games. Upconverting really does work and is pretty cool... I thought that would be an awesome feature. Disappointed to hear I may not get that.

You can get that with the 80GB version (or the 60GB if you can still find one out there.)

Sony is hoping the Playstation 3 has the same cycle as the Playstation 2. The perceived battle between the 360 and the PS3, while important, isn't the end-all-be-all to what's going on in the next-gen console wars. Sony is winning that way technically, because they are still selling more software through their consoles than both Microsoft and Nintendo, they're just doing in through two different platforms. Technically, they are battling themselves, and they see the need to kind of "push" their Playstation audiences into the PS3 format. The Cell processor and Blu-ray storage abilities could potentially give the PS3 active life for 5-7 more years - long after the X-Box 360 is abandoned by Microsoft for their next money-losing console.

Sony's mistake was to release the PS3 so early to try (and fail) to hang on to market share with a piece of hardware they couldn't manufacture cheap enough. The Blu-Ray HD DVD war played a part in that, and Sony has benefitted on that front, because the PS3 turned the tide in the war and it has yet to faulter since.

Unfiltered said it right, though. If you want the PS3, but it doesn't have any games, then why even consider it at this point?

I'm another PS3 owner, and as stated before, it is an AMAZING machine that is ahead of it's time and it's built like a tank. People saying it's too expensive are only looking at it as a game machine and it is much much more than that. You could argue that a $10,000 BMW is expensive. Everything is relative. Yes the PS3 costs more than the other two game consoles, but you are getting a lot more for your money. Once the full potential of the Cell Processor is realized, it WILL blow you.

As I stated previously, I watch a great deal of HD movies via Blu-ray titles through rental and purchasing. I also use it as my primary DVD player for standard def DVDS, DVD-As, and SACDs.

I'll sometimes pop my camera's memory card and view photos on the 52" Aquos instead of everyone having to crowd around a computer.

I also use it for video playback of HD footage I shot and cut on my Mac.
