Sony to launch cheaper PlayStation 3

They had to make the cut soon, just a matter of time.

Well since the only reason right now i'd buy a PS3 is for the blu-ray the stripped down version will suit me just fine.

Only games i play are on the pc and console ones don't really do it for me ATM.

By January i should have enough in Christmas bonuses and gift cards to almost pay the whole thing off anyway :P

Also, the folding@home feature is kind of nice. Playstation Home is supposed to be introduced within the next few months to a year I believe. And like, I said, once the power of the chip is realized, there will be even more capabilities. Plus it upconverts standard def DVD's and you can use it to surf the web. Just connect a keyboard and mouse.

Oh yeah, and apparently in Europe, they're testing with DVR capabilities. You can't beat that.

see those are a crap load of things i didnt know you could do with a PS3...thanks for the INfo

DVR capabilities? That makes me want to buy now. Hopefully they'll bring that feature to North America

Sony is hoping the Playstation 3 has the same cycle as the Playstation 2. The perceived battle between the 360 and the PS3, while important, isn't the end-all-be-all to what's going on in the next-gen console wars. Sony is winning that way technically, because they are still selling more software through their consoles than both Microsoft and Nintendo, they're just doing in through two different platforms. Sony's mistake was to release the PS3 so early to try (and fail) to hang on to market share with a piece of hardware they couldn't manufacture cheap enough. The Blu-Ray HD DVD war played a part in that, and Sony has benefitted on that front, because the PS3 turned the tide in the war and it has yet to faulter since.

Unfiltered said it right, though. If you want the PS3, but it doesn't have any games, then why even consider it at this point?

Actually, most consoles are considered a loss for each unit moved. Even the PS3.

They look at software being the money maker.

Except Nintendo, who profits from the Wii. Or Sony in regard to the Playstation 2 in the present time. Consoles can become profittable once costs come down.

The problem was that the PS3 was so expensive to manufacture that even at a loss, Sony priced themselves out of the "accepted" range for a video game system that the average person has adopted. Many are starting to see that wasn't necessarily the case considering what all the PS3 brings to their home entertainment center.

by releasing the 40gb ps3, it will bring the cost down for the 80gb version and any 60gbs that are left. IF you want BC (which isn't really necessary) then you can get one of those versions. the only people who care about BC are people who own ps2 games. so if you own 20+ ps2 games and don't own a ps2, there's something wrong with you. fortunately, i don't fall into that category since i have full BC with my 60gb.

how many of you bought a super nintendo expecting to play the old 8-bit NES games? oh wait...they didn't. same thing now. time to move on to the latest and greatest. there ARE ps3 games out. and there will be even more if you wait. they've only been out for a year, so you have to give the developers some time to get out titles. it's not like they only have 10 games out. there are many more than that.
