Get some wireless surround headphones. My Turtle Beach 7.1 headphones sound amazing with movies.
Sound bars are only worth their money if you get the upper end ones ($1000+). I did a lot of research on them when I built my dads theater room.

Soundbars do not equal surround sound. Even if it is a small room a surround system with a sub-woofer will make your music and movies come alive especially if your system is Digital and Dolby certified.
If you are sharing walls with a roommate or neighbors make them get earplugs.
