Is there a big difference between 720p & 1080p?

I'm in the market for a new tv. I am currently looking at the Samsung 51' with 720p.

Yes. 50% better resolution. Well worth it when watching sports in HD. Also look at refresh rate. The faster the better.

And it absolutely will be noticeable on a TV of that size.

Yes, there's a big difference...but only if you watch content that is output at 1080p. If you don't have a Bluray player/PS3 and don't plan to get one in the next 3-5 years then I'd only go with the cheaper 720p/1080i TV to save a buck.
For my cable company, it only outputs HD channels at 720p/1080i so I'm not getting the full benefit of my TV's 1080p capabilities.
I do have a BR player and a PS3 so 1080p is crucial.
It is the latest tech and until 4k resolution tv's and content become mainstream it doesn't really make sense IMO to not get 1080p.

Yes, 1080p makes a huge difference. it will let you watch Bluray movies in native format, as well as PS3 games. It is an increase in the pixels to make up your picture. Make sure to get a set with a 120Hz. refresh. Anything over that is generally not needed. And the 120hz feature only helps you out with DVD movies since they are typically filmed at 24fps. It won't create an extra frame or create stuttering in fast paced movies with stuff like car chases or fast moving items. Especially those sets over 240hz are just bs. It splits up the picture into multiple zones on the set that still run at 120hz. Just make sure its 1080p, 120hz, and get the set calibrated by a certified installer. If you do that, you will be very happy with the purchase, and the set should look good and last you a long time.

I have a Wii not PS3. I only play the lego games on it & use the work out video. Video games won't be an issue. I have the HD DTV box. 720p & 1080p are the resolutions.

Anything above 42" it will make a marked visual difference. If you were buying a smaller screen for your bedroom, you could probably get along fine with a 720p set.

1080 is about 360 better than 720.

I've been told 720P is best for watching sports. 1080P for everything else...

720p is better to watch sports than 1080i. 1080p is still best.
