I'd rather have my own recordings in HD than spend hours DLing something that usually turns out to be a shoddy one with some parts missing.

As far as I know this is completely untrue. I have hundreds of old Kings recordings on my hard drive from DirecTV. They aren't in HD but they were recorded from an HD stream. Transferring them to DVD is much more simpler to do than capturing from DVR. A few years ago I bought a Blackmagic Intensity Pro HD capture card so that I could capture the HD recordings from my DVR to my hard drive using the HDMI input. Unfortunately at the time the Balckmagic captgure card only streamed uncompressed HD Content to my Hard Drive and my files ended up being 80 to 120 Gig's (Yikes). So I stopped recording games to my hard drive but since then they have developed motion jpeg software for a compressed capture solution (10 to 12 Gig's. Much better) but I have yet to try it out.

that looks pretty cool. dumb question but what does it tape things on? a disc or what. lord help me, New technology.

Anybody got recommendations for just going straight from DVR to disc? I know there are a lot of options, but if you've got something in particular you think is worthwhile, that would be great.
