Default Transfering video from DVR to PC/Mac

What's the most effective way to transfer video from my dvr to either my desktop pc or my mac book?

I have the "Dazzle" from Pinnacle which allows me to transfer the video via composite cables or s-video cable. My only problem with this method is the loss of signal quality upon transfer. The colors become muted and the picture loses general crisp-ness.

If I were to upgrade my PC's video card to a card capable of video capture, would the satellite video encryption prohibit me from transferring my saved dvr programs to my desktop?

    I use this:

It works really well, especially for HD.

I know with tivos, you can use mac2tivo to transfer files.
