Upgrading Cell Phones
My wife and I need new phones and we are on Verizon w/ unlimited data and would like to keep it that way.
The only way to do it is not to upgrade through them.
Those in the know where is the best and safest place to get them?
Do they need to be unlocked or can we do it ourselves?
Pretty much looking for a Nexus Galaxy 4 or maybe a III if it's more cost effective.
Is there anything else we need to know buying from a 3rd party?

Well Sprint and Verizon unlike other carriers use cdma which means you have to get a phone specially for their network. Buying an unlocked gsm won't do you any good. You would have to buy a Verizon phone either at full price or online, just make sure it has a clean esn so it can be activated. I recommend swappa.com or eBay for peace of mind. Getting a phone off craigslist with a bad esn is useless. Luckily I think with the S4 coming out you should be able to find some deals from ppl trying to unload their old phones.

There will be a more durable wind/ water resistant S4 coming out in summer. I would suggest waiting for it.
The only way to keep your unlimited plan is to buy at full retail. Verizon will make you switch if you go through them.
How much data are you both using maybe a data share plan would work

I grew a Fatmanchu.
I'm not sure if this is going to help you or not but my wife and I switched from Sprint to Tmobile and now we only pay $150 for 5 lines (Unlimited talk, text and data with no contract if you buy your own phone) and I don't have to worry about CDMA sucking the life out of my phone. Had Verizon before Sprint and still can't believe how poor their battery life gets because of their use of CDMA. FYI Google announced that they're coming out with an S4 with the stock OS.

Not sure what they are telling you, but we've had unlimited data forever, and have upgraded our phones twice. They keep your contract/plan the same, just update the phone and extend it out the two years. It is worth looking into..

Sux, they told me I don't use that much data but I think they lie my phone always shows I'm at the limit.

That is incorrect. Verizon will require you to pay for the phone in full if you want your unlimited plan. Even with a 2 year commitment, they will force you to go to their limited plan and will not carry over the unlimited plan for the new phones. This may change in the future but this info is accurate as of today. ATT will allow you to carry over your unlimited plan over if you kept it all these years.

Unless Verizon has changed policy in the last six months, I think Peanut4 is spot on. I upgraded phones on both mine and my wife's line, both of which had unlimited data just last November. I told them flat-out that unless they would let me keep my existing plans, that I was gone. I simply signed a new two-year agreement for both lines and walked out with two iphone 4s at the less-than-full-price price.
Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Bullets are cheap. Life is priceless.

if you upgrade to an LTE device they will make you change the data plan. There s a new SOC CODE for the LTE plan, Thats how they get around letting you keep it.
Sir Your bill will show exactly how much data the phone is using. Keep in mind when you stream in WiFi your phone will will show that as data, even though it doesnt count on the bill

Hmm.. our phones are LTE devices.. still unlimited data plans.. not sure why it would be different now. That sucks, hope you figure something out!
