Think about your family and safety as well. There have been a myriad of issues of VOIP and 911 calls not being routed and directed correctly. Contact your local fire or police department and ask THEM what they think of the service and if they'd had any issues. At one point, all of Vonage 911 calls were routed to a dispatch center in Canada. Not sure if they have streamlined the process. My wife often handles complaints from residents who complain that the Fire Dept. weren't able to respond to the correct address of their calls, when the information their dispatch was provided was incorrect in the first place.

On another safety note is the fact that in the event of a power outage - you're COMPLETELY without phone. Haivng gone through disasters in the past, I'm sure you're aware than regular land-line telephones, while still vulnerable to disasters, are far more resistant than power, and usually restored far quicker as well. Cell service is usually completely jammed at best, and completely dead at worst.

I would recommend, at the very least, the most BASIC, BASIC land line package for emergency purposes, and if you want a VOIP service, then use it as you regular phone service.

Also make sure to have a non-AC necessary phone to plug into the landline as well. Cordless phones are useless when the power is out.
