Deal? What deal? ;) I did read that there is a price drop expected on the 3800 after CES. I did also find a deal on the Denon 3808 as well, but that was after I pulled the trigger. I had to end the paralysis by analysis...

That extra cash went to a new subwoofer (I had an 8" Sony 50 Watt), a new center, and a DVD player that sends SACD via HDMI.

The 5000 still has a video limitation. We were watching South Park Season 10, and the Samsung stretches it 16:9. We don't have many TV shows on 4:3 DVD so it isn't a big concern.

Groovy. I just picked up a new Oppo 981 for the same reason. (Well, one of them. The other is my ridiculous PAL/Multi-region international library.)

I usually check High Def Digest multiple times a day. Today I was swamped. I think I checked during the first period of the CAN/USA game, and I think it was announced shortly afterwards. I didn't go back until about 6PM tonight. I couldn't BELIEVE what has gone on in five hours at that place. It was a madhouse. Pathetic, really, when you take into account that people have been SO divided over something as simple as a video format scuffle. There were threads encouraging people to write their senators and congressman to stop the "Evil Sony" from killing their format. Some of the Blu supporters are just as bad - evident back when the Paramount/DW announcement was made.

The real problems I see is two fold - often immature video game fans who have been dealing with "format battles" for years were brought into the war automatically by Sony and Microsoft, and then the slashing of prices led to people investing eariler than they normally should have - almost gambling that their selection would be the "winner".

I went with Yamaha since it was a carousel. While I do have an ipod, I still prefer CD's. So when I am cleaning the place, I can put 5 discs (SACD, CD, DVD-A)in and listen away, keeping my mind off cleaning.

Yeah.. It does. Maybe a firmware update to disable. That is my most annoying (minor) video issue with the Samsung.

Cool. I'm always looking for excuses to avoid AVS, as well. ;)

BTW, Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, and another title that I can't remember (possibly The Matrix) are already being worked on by Warner for release within the next few months. That's the word I got at least.

Also as far as LOTR goes, we worked on those movies months ago and for some reason New Line has delayed releasing them. I assume they'll come out later this year. Just the theatrical release for now.
