.wav vs. .mp3 and how do I compress them without losing qualiuty??? *HALP*

I'll use this one sound clip I'm working with as an example but in general I would love to know the solution to this problem...


I have a .wav file that's 2:01 long and it's 10.1 MB.
(705kpbs) not sure if that's relevant or not...

I can convert it to an .mp3 and it drops to 824KB
(54kbps) still not sure if that's relevant or not...

Anyway....

Is there any reliable way to compress it as a .wav file and still maintain relative audio quality? Without spending a lot of money on audio editing equipment?

No such thing as a lossless mp3.

no such thing as a compressed wav file.

Use flac as mentioned above.

as an audiophile, I love what modern technology has to offer, but digital loss always bums me out.

You need to encode it to a higher quality mp3. 192k or even higher and not 54k, which is ****. Every convertor program should have a setting to choose what bitrate to encode it at.

you should be able to convert to a lossless wma as well.

You can't have compression without Loss!!!

You can make it mp3 but use a real high sampling rate like 320 and only your dog will hear the difference.

Not true. FLAC is compression without loss.
