Windows 7 Retail Ultimate

Just got my hands on a copy for testing...

I performed a clean install and the O.S. was fully installed and operational in about 20 minutes. Did not need to provide ANY drivers as they were all found during the install.

I have a Quad Core PC with 4GB of ram, I installed the
X64 version and all I can say is GOOD LORD!! Microsoft got this one right. It has the speed of XP and the feel of Vista with a lot of improvements, like the features actually work! If you are like me and tend to have a LOT of windows open you are going to love the new navigation in the task bar. The file libraries are cool too.

All in all, I have to say that I think that this O.S. will be able to compete with the Mac OSX for quality.

Just curious, but what features? Going by the videos on their site, it looks like they added a better taskbar that resembles the dock in OSX, the windows version of spotlight, and they improved media center (not hard to do, considering the previous version).

I have just started testing the features but 2 important ones that I have noticed are the System Restore points are much more reliable and also, the UAC security features are much improved. You now have a lot more flexibility as compared to Vista where it was pretty much off or on. Also, the file management (Media, documents ect...) it much more in tune with the way people actually use a PC. This was a point that MS was trying to improve in Vista but was not really that great. The new file libraries are fantastic.

Also, did I mention that even with all of the eye candy turned on and a ton (15 for testing) gadgets on my desktop, Windows 7 is much much more responsive than Vista and even XP. And this is on the same machine. Windows 7 seems to be able to take full advantange of the hardware you provide it. I will be running bench tests this weekend comparing Vista and Windows 7. I'll try and get them up early in the week.

What about the horrendous DRM that was introduced in Vista?

Good to hear. I might be moving back to Windows if 7 turns out to be what was promised. I love my Mac but I'm in need of a new computer and this time around, Windows might actually compete for my business.
