Default Windows vista update on flashdrive?

After getting our new iMac, I put our Dell in the den for the kids to use and bought a Netgear wireless adapter. I can't get it to intsall correctly so I called the tech support and he says my vista isn't up to date. He says I need to connect the Dell to my router using a long cable to update it. I don't have a cable that long. Can I get an update onto a flash drive on my computer and then plug it into the dell and do the update or do I really need to get an ethernet cable to do this?

You can download the drivers onto a flash drive and install them on the dell.
