This isn't a bad idea either. Either ask a neighbor or look for an open network.

I have thought about that for a while. what is the average range for the wireless? the nearest neighbor is 50 feet away.

Typically if you have a smart phone, you are paying for internet access, approximately $30-$45/month. At least via Verizon, for an additional $15/month, you can add on the tethering package. You would hook your phone up directly to your computer and using your phone carrier's Access Manager, you would dialup and connect via your phone. the connection tends to be about 1MB. If you get an incoming call while on the web, it will interrupt your internet connection so you can take the call.

If you don't intend to use a Smartphone with internet access, its probably cost prohibitive for you. You can also look into getting an air card directly from your mobile carrier, but they tend to be anywhere from $30-$60 depending on your existing service and what your bandwidth needs are.

I tether with a Sony Flip phone with the 10 a month data plan all the time. The carriers don't want you to but very doable. Sony even offers PC suite for free that will tether your SE phone in a few clicks.
With 3g phones you cam tether and receive calls w/o losing connection
Keep in mind all cell carriers have a 5GB cap.

5GB? per sec? day? month? Dan, I need to hook up with you on the mobiles. any good deals out there? my wench is currently searching. npot much I can do on this device built in the stone age.
