Wireless internet access w/ a laptop

assuming that this is a legitimate statement the reason you would want to use a wire to connect the phone to the laptop is to use the laptop's power source so you don't kill your phone battery.

I know this is a bit off topic, but wouldn't the ipad with the 3g be an easy answer? I just got one...if anyone has any feedback on their use, please let me know. thanks

Either way, most smart phones (even the not-so-smart ones) come with a micro-usb port which takes up very little space. Also, some of the newer smart phones have the ability to create a wireless hotspot, which lets you connect multiple devices at once.

I'll admit to being even less than "just not well informed". My 0.5G old-school clamshell cell phone is one step up from Maxwell Smart's shoe-phone.
