Default XP Computer BSOD On Boot...

    Ugh...

I don't often run into issues that I can't fix with my desktops, but this one has me stumped in a large fashion.

I can't get it to boot. Period. It won't boot to Safe Mode. It won't boot to a command prompt. It won't boot normally. It locks up and gives me a blue screen of death that says check for viruses and run chkdsk /r. Well...how do I do that without being able to get to the command prompt??

    It's an XP machine.

Nope. BSOD'd on me during boot from recovery CD.

Is this thing toast? I need a new one anyhow, but I'm not ready to spend the dough. Dammit all.

if you have backups: format and reinstall.

So i yanked the main HDD and put it into an enclosure to attach it to the other desktop. Can't be recognized. Says it isn't formatted. Can't run chkdsk on it at all.

Ideas? This disk has all the important crapola on it and it's been a couple months since I backed up. Recovery of this is kind of essential.

UGH. I think this thing may have been setup in a RAID array.

I feel for you. Been down this road a couple times. If you can't access the drive with diagnostic software, then you could have a major hardware failure. The good news is that even if that is the case, the vast majority of your data is recoverable. It's just expensive. You'll have to send it to a recovery service and it will likely cost you $1,500-$2000. I personally like Kroll Ontrack but there are a few other companies out there that are good.

Maybe the gurus around here have some other ideas, but if you really can't access it at all, send it to the pros.

Have you had any issues before? Read/write errors? Stalled boot ups? Error messages? Does the drive spin up? Does it make clicking noises? Does the system Bios recognize the drive (with the correct parameters)?

Wait... this is a raid 0 config striped across multiple drives? How many drives did you use in the raid? Yikes. I've never dealt with a bad drive pulled from a raid 0 set. It can't be good

If it can't be recognized by the system in an enclousure, thats generally a bad sign. Does it may any noise at all? You can try downloading the disk utilities from the hard drive manufacturer's website, which usually creates a bootable cd image. Boot from that CD and see if it can read the disk and run a diagnostic on it. You are probably screwed. If its clicking or making a weird noise, you can try the freezer trick. Wrap the drive in a dish towel, put it in a plastic baggie and put it in the freezer for 24-48 hours. Take the drive out put it in the enclosure and try to read the drive as quick as possible.
And thats how you get ants!
