And your cellular company knows where you are at all times as long as your phone is turned on.

Good thing it's tracking my location, now it can tell the brain surgeon where to find me to remove the tumor it's giving me.
^This post is completely idiotic, don't read it.^

this is one of the stupidest letters i have ever seen.
    -----
    1. Why does Apple collect and compile this location data? Why did Apple choose to initiate tracking this data in its iOS 4 operating system?
    2. Does Apple collect and compile this location data for laptops?
    3. How is this data generated? (GPS, cell tower triangulation, Wi-Fi triangulation, etc.
    4. Gow frequently is a user's location recorded? What triggers the creation of a record of someone's location?
    5. How precise is this location data? Can it track the users location to 50 m, 100 m, etc.?
    6. Why is this data not encrypted? What steps will Apple take to encrypt the data?
    7. Why were Apple consumers never affirmatively informed of the collection and retention of their location data in this manner? Why did Apple not seek affirmative consent before doing so?
    8. Does Apple believe that this conduct is permissible under the terms of its privacy policy?
    9. To whom, if anyone, including Apple, has this data been disclosed? When and why were these disclosures made?
    ------

Most of those questions are pretty easy to answer.

#1 is to improve location services on the phone, particularly in urban areas where GPS lock is difficult to attain. They'll probably quibble about Apple "collecting and compiling", given that Apple isn't collecting nor compiling that data, their phone is and keeps the data to itself.

#2 is an obvious no as none of Apple's laptops have WWAN hardware built-in. Plug in a USB WWAN modem though and your carrier will most certainly be keeping similar data on their end, but since CoreLocation doesn't exist on OS X, the data would not be stored in the laptop.

#3 the current guess is that it's cell tower triangulation and the points are the locations of towers that your phone has communicated with, since AGPS data includes precise lat/long coordinates for the local tower as well as an almanac of satellite data that the tower has seen, to allow quick lock. That kind of answers #4 and #5 too.

#4's answer (assuming #3 is accurate) is that it's recorded whenever the phone connects to a new tower.

#5 (again assuming #3) is that it's woefully inaccurate at tracking the user: all it logs to the file is the location of cell towers it has communicated with, so if you're talking to a tower that is hundreds of miles away, its only accurate to hundreds of miles. This would explain why my phone's map shows communications with a tower in ****ing Newport, OR when I haven't ever been there with this phone, and doesn't show a single point within half a mile of my apartment.

#6 it is encrypted in device backups, and it's not on the phone because it'd be pointless to encrypt it on the phone as the keys have to be available for the phone to access the contents of the file and thus encrypting it would merely provide the illusion of security as any code running as root on the device would be able to find the keys and decrypt the file.

#7, 8, and 9 are probably more for Apple to explain, but I'd guess that their explanation will be something like "this data isn't collected by Apple, it's locally stored on the phone and thus contained in device backups on any computer it's backed up by. It's disclosed to absolutely nobody, including Apple, and because it's not shared with anyone including us, there are no conflicts with Apple's privacy policy and this kind of logging."

Also, quite a lot of these questions were answered by the security group that did the original research, and have been completely blown out of proportion by the press reporting on it.

I could have told you it did that, ever notice that your phone keeps track of the picture locations on a map? how do you think it knows?
