Default August: LGK Beach Hockey Roller Pick-up Thread (****It's FREE!!!****)

Who is interested in playing a little roller hockey at the beach in Santa Monica ? It 'll be free, minimal equipment required and we can check out hot tourist girls and drink afterwards.

What weekend dates and times work to set this bad boy up ?

I was thinking about starting around 2-3pm til we collapse so we can have more of the parking lot to ourselves.

Does anyone in the West LA area play parking lot pickup hockey (like the games they play at Santa Monica) with a puck?

Players always look at me like I'm crazy when I ask that, but when I was in college my friends and I used to play almost daily with RHI pucks on surfaces WAY rougher and cracked than the SM beach parking lots. In fact, there's a section of blacktop that people play on in Santa Monica that easily looks smooth enough to play on with a puck.

Yes, the puck will skip from time-to-time, and you can't skate alongside the moving puck as you would on ice or with a ball, but the amount of control you have with a puck (stopping or turning quickly) and the accuracy you get passing or shooting far outweigh the benefits of the ball, in my opinion. Plus, to me, without a puck, it just ain't hockey.

    Anyone?

Before they came out with those fancy schmancy roller pucks we used to use a regular roll of black electrical tape. It's a little lighter than an ice puck and it slides on the ground a little better. On smooth concrete surfaces like park or school raquetball courts, ice pucks work pretty well.
