    Default closing/relocation of Anaheim Ice?

If you go to the following link ....

    http://www.westminsterice.com/

.... and click on the story titled "Westminster Ice Arena Is More Successful Than Ever" they mention the possible closing/relocation of Anaheim Ice (formerly Disney Ice).

Do any of you OC hockey players know more about this?

AI is a modern-looking Frank Gehry-designed structure that opened only 12 years ago, and I'd be shocked to hear/see it close. One thing I know about it is that it's on land owned by the city of Anaheim (not the Samueli's or Disney, the former Duck owners) and the rink was built on that land with little if any payment to the city, provided that the rink provides some programs for at-risk youth, which they do:

I heard The Ducks don't like the new lease and are building their own practice rink since the city owns the rink now and feels the property is worth more as something else, perhaps condos.

Also, what's the parking situation there now since they built something on the open-air lot they used to have? Do you have to pay to park in the parking structure just to the east?

AnaheimIce is not closing. Was a false rumor that was confirmed through the operating manager of AnaheimIce. The ducks however are looking to build a rink near Mission Viejo.

Parking is free in the parking structure for AnaheimIce. Just need to have your ticket validated. Weekends in the parking structure is free.

... and it is the only local Gehry building that makes any kind of sense. It's a very good looking bldg.

It would be a shame if it is torn down. But Anaheim has already pretty much made it invisible by the 4 story apts being built on the corner. You can't even see the building anymore from Harbor Blvd.

    Anaheim's "city master planning" <<< L.A. (and that's saying a lot!)

i heard about the ducks moving to another rink too. i hope AI isn't closing, but i wouldn't be surprised since they're building all those condos around it and they would probably make a lot more money doing that.

they do the disney goals program and i've donated some equipment to them. but when i went last week early to watch them play, it didn't look like there were THAT many kids playing. i was a little surprised that there weren't more. maybe because of the fact that hockey is so expensive to play?

i don't think they're going to close anytime soon, but if/when the ducks move i can see that as a big blow. i guess we'll just see.

i just talked to someone there and they said they're not going anywhere. so it's just probably a rumor. kinda sucks that westminster would be spreading them like that on their site.

    Me, too.

But that's the whole point of the Disney GOALS program: the kids don't have to pay anything. All they have to do is keep up decent grades and don't get in trouble with the law.

I don't know OC very well, so I was surprised to hear that there were so many at-risk kids in Anaheim.

I'd love it if the people who owned LAHC/Westminster Ice Arena could take over Anaheim Ice. Think of what they could do with a nice, well-lit 2-sheet facility? A whole lot better than that ****bag Art Trottier.

i don't know. i didn't really like westminster when i played there. maybe they just hated our team for some reason. they would threaten us with uniform penalties for jerseys that "didn't match" because we had all white jerseys and i had a old school white/black/grey kings jersey. but when i change into my all white jersey, i see the other team with different color jerseys without a penalty.

the refs love to argue with the players...one wanted to meet one of my teammates after the game to throw down in the parking lot. they allow chippy play the whole game and then wonder why there are fights.

at anaheim, the refs are pretty fair and consistent. if they see the game turning chippy, they will call it tighter and it eventually calms down.

maybe we're talking about different things. i'm happier with the anaheim ice staff than the westminster staff. and of course i love the nhl and olympic rinks compared to westminster. never met art trottier, but rick is a really cool guy.

also about disney goals, yeah i understand the point of the program. i was just surprised that there weren't more kids playing. in my earlier post i meant to say that maybe because hockey is seen as being so expensive, it discourages kids from even thinking about playing the sport. who knows... but i'm glad that the rink and programs will continue on for a long time.
