Hey all,
I'm totally retarded when it comes to Roller Hockey, because I started on the ice, and have never played Roller. Due to some financial issues, I think that my future might be in Roller which is VERY MUCH less expensive to play a season.
Which parts of my gear can I transfer over? (Other than Skates, which are a given). How hard is it going to be for me to learn to skate on blades ?(I've been on roller blades maybe 3 times in my life when I was a young kid).
Ice to roller is a lot easier transition than roller to ice
Gloves, Helmet, elbow pads, shinpads, jock & stick can all transfer over
get some basic roller hockey pants, 20-30 bucks. i wouldn't recommend shoulder pads, but if you insist then i recommend picking up some roller specific ones.
my opinion though is stick to ice.
Anything for ice can be used for roller. You just don't wear shoulder pads or the ice pants.
Depending on the surface, you may want a different stick, though. If you have an older ice stick, the surface may shred it pretty quick.
Ian is about the roller pants. Buy a pretty cheap pair b/c they all tear apart if you fall, regardless of what kind you get.
Getting used to stopping should be your only real challenge. Understand you'll fall alot. (I play far more roller, so I can't stop worth **** on ice).
Also, understand that the roller puck is lighter (you'll be more impressed with your shot), but it doesn't glide as far as on ice. I remember playing roller for years, and the first time suited up for ice and I threw an ice puck onto the rink from the bench, the damn thing went to the other side of the rink, passed the goal.
These things are different, but not too hard to get accustomed to.
I've seen lots of folks wear their ice pants on roller, just be prepared to burn through socks fast.

I went from roller to ice. A few things...
Stopping will take a lot more force. The puck isn't going to move, in fact...it will seem slow. Like fish said, you'll barely even feel the puck on your stick.
I never had a problem tearing up my pants, but that had to do with me playing on sport court. If you are playing outdoors or on a roll on type surface, you are going to chew everything up.
Get a cheap 2pc stick with an abs blade. 82-84a wheels if it is outdoors, 74a'ish wheels if you are on sport court.
It's going to be HOT. No shoulders (and I didn't even wear elbows). A thin girdle will help keep you cool as well.

Learn to T-Stop.
Once you get your skates, just get some roller pants (ice hockey socks will rip up the first couple times you slide) and if you're playing on a concrete surface, I would get a good stick shaft and then a couple good wood blades. If not, all wood sticks are cheap and they really aren't that bad to use, you just have to get used to the weight. Then just make sure you have the right wheels depending on what kind of surface it is. Stopping isn't as bad as people make it out to be, if you have the right kind of wheels, they slide to a stop just as if you were stopping on ice.
I'm the opposite of you, I started out playing roller and just in the last couple of years have started to play ice. Honestly, I like them both and each of them have their pros and cons. The thing about roller is I really don't like playing when it's hot outside. I love playing indoors in the cold, just something about it. But the one thing that prevented me from starting out on ice rather than roller is $$$. So I completely understand you switching. I still do cringe everytime I have to go pay $15 to skate for an hour when I can go to the outdoor rink down the street from my house and skate for as long as I want for free dollars.
Just don't stop playing either one, they're both hockey.
