    Default Core training for hockey?

I've been taking skating lessons at the local rink, and am making slow but steady progress. It occurs to me that I'd do better at skating if my core strength were better (been riding a desk for too many years). A lot of the movements (e.g. switching from forward to backward) call for a rotation of the body that my bloated torso doesn't seem to want to do.

Sooooo, any recommendations for good hockey-specific core exercises? Or are we just talking the usual crunches, side bends and twists?

    Pilates will do the trick.

You could get a dvd (make sure it's by someone you've never heard of and it's an unflashy Pilates technique format like this ).
If you dig it, find a teacher to give you a one on one just to nail down your technique.
It's pricey but cheaper than a dominatrix and more painful.

I take this class weekday mornings, but I had a traditional Pilates teacher for years. It's so worth it to take care of your back and core.

    PS Pilates is ****ing hard.

PPS I know it's not hockey specific, per se, but it will work.

Damn, that Ab Master is looking more appealing all the time.

Seriously, though, thanks for the detailed post. I'll give it a try!

I hear the maddogg ride-er-cise is a great workout... but its only available to the ladies. Thats right ladies, hop on the wild maddogg train and get one heck of a workout, and I only charge 19.95 a month for six months... then I get bored and toss you out the back door. But at least your in better shape.

She tells no lies. Pilates will kick your ass if you do it right, but it's probably one of the most beneficial things you can do to strengthen your core. Some guys might get hung up on it, and if that's the case let me tell you that the Marine Corps uses it in their martial arts program, the do planks when they do unit pt, and they also offer classes, and a LOT of Marines take them.

It's seriously one of those things that you're asking yourself why you're doing it, but feel great when you're done.

Oh yeah and you gotta stop eating bread and stop drinking for a while.

    You'll see your results.
