Face-offs, Sweat and Vomit Lead LGK to 1-0 Start
5/14/2009
North Hollywood, Ca.
It takes three periods of hard work and perseverance to win a hockey game. That’s the lesson learned by team LGK in their opening night 4-2 victory over the sharply dressed Venom.
LGK dominance in the face-off circle was the key to their scoring in a defensive battle that saw only a combined 33 shots put up the entire game. LGK jumped on the board early when Zgold9915 was the recipient of a win in the circle by Fabio, he then skated through the two Venom defensemen on his way to a backhand goal during the 4th minute of the first period.
The Venom’s inability to control the draw stung them once again with 9 minutes left in the 2nd period. With LGK on the power play, Fabio (2 assist) took the draw clean in the offensive zone and pushed it back to defensemen Adam “The Fireman” who promptly took a trip to the red-light district with a blast from the point that beat the goalie top shelf blocker side. “Man, that kid has a hammer from the top”, CheezNcrackerz96 (1 goal) said after the game.
The second period labored on with neither team being able to sustain any sort of consistent pressure, until with 5 minutes remaining things got interesting. The Venom closed the gap to one when a rare Romik “The Postman” rebound found a way onto a crashing forwards stick which he put in the back of the net. On the following shift Crackerz put a puck off the post with a wide open net sitting in front of him. “I got to put the in the net 10 out of 10 times” said Crackerz after the game. The Venom failed to capitalize on the opportunity though and James Jewett, who led the team in ice time, took a turnover by the Venom Goalie and sent the team to the locker room with a 2 goal advantage to start the 3rd period.
The defense, which only surrendered 12 shots total for the game, came out and completely controlled the neutral zone in the 3rd and a frustrated Venom squad took 3 penalties, the last of which led to the final LGK goal – ending any chance of a Venom comeback. A very strong showing in the final period was highlighted by Zgold disposing of his lunch (and dinner) into a trash can on the bench right before final buzzer sounded. “Your not going to write about this in the game report, are you?” Gold questioned after the game.
