If you dont' get the free skates just go to Jakes and or the Super Stores in OC to get fitted you will be so much happier and will progress much faster if your skates don't hurt.

Gear from us, ebay and or craigslist is the way to go b4 you invest big money in the sport and either quit or end up replacing once you know what you really like.

I have a bunch of loaner gear and a pair of skates to the cause too. I'm in Hermosa Beach and you can come anytime you can to try on what you need.

Best piece of equipment for anyone are the graf anatomic footbeds.

Skates have to fit right to speed up the skating learning curve. Those footbeds do wonders to lock your heel in the skate without having to over tighten the boot.

Lookup youtube video's on how to hockey stop on ice

Also, if you know how to snow skii the movement of a hockey stop is very similar.

For the hockey stop start by going to the dasher boards. Practice planting one foot and sliding the other sideways. This will help you figure out where your "edges" are. From there try pushing, sliding and lifting your plant foot. If you can sustain the slide and then angle the sliding foot to stop one legged you've found that inside edge.

Try skating forward and angling one foot in a snowplow in the same fashion.

Ive been on a youtube video bender since i decided to start playing. I can sorta turn but my momentum makes me do a quick turn instead of a stop. Lol which is funny cause now i love going down the ice and being able to turn quickly. But I still have a problem with either applying the correct amount of pressure down and pivoting my feet. Just feels weird but ill keep at it.

Ill try the snowplow movement and work my way from there as suggested thanks!

Practice, practice, practice is what it takes, whether it is learning to skate or play the piano. Your body has to learn a whole new set of movements so it is just a matter of muscle memory, and muscle memory requires repetition. The more time you put in, the quicker you'll learn to skate. That's all there is to it.

How much did your Vapor 3.0s cost? I went to jakes today and those fit me great and were reasonable price for $150 for beginner skates. I might start going to my local ice rink where I used to ice skate when I was smaller. Hopefully I could remember everything.
