    Default First time playing hockey!

Hi guys, sorry if this is somewhat OT, just wanted to share. I played my first bit of hockey at a skills clinic in riverside (ice town) tonight. Hockey is hard! Here's some observations.

    1) I hope to god my skates break in soon. I've only used them once before, but my feet were on fire all night, and in a bad way. My right foot went numb, and the bottoms of my feet were in pain all night. I do wear orthodics in my regular shoe (prescription, hard plastic kind), so I may look into getting some if the pain doesn't go away after a month or two.

    2) My glasses kept slipping out of place. I think my helmet wasn't on right.

    3) My legs are going to be sore as hell tomorrow. That will get better over time I think.

    4) I was definitely the slowest, most noob out there, but I did have a lot of fun, and most everyone was really helpful and understanding of my position.

I really hope to keep going, but they're changing the time of the clinics to 9:15, and that may be just too late for me (gotta be up at 5am). We'll see. I'll probably do a lot of public skating since I really really REALLY need to work on my skating. It's hard for me to stop and I can't skate backwards at all.

Overall, besides the pain and frustration, I had a ton of fun out there. I think I'm going to stick with it! Just wanted to share, that I finally got off my butt and suited up, even if it was rather silly feeling. I'm in pain, but I feel great!

Great to hear you started hockey. Its hard as hell and I still can't skate backwards but I love it. I am gonna try to get out as much as I can this summer.

I just started as well, you will get a lot better rather quickly as you get more comfortable on your skates. I used the free skates to get used to doing crossovers and "plows", but when it came to actually trying to stop (and I am still working on that) I did it in my gear so I didn't break my butt.

Glad my foot isn't the only one that goes numb. Mine is a little wide, so I leave the lower portion of the skate a little looser than the top and it helped quiet a bit.

It usually takes a little while to break in the skate and for it to feel comfortable. Just keep with it and you'll get better. Congrats on starting, you won't regret it!

Now you guys (presumably) will be able to come play with the LGK folks at the drunkfests known as LGK hockey games.

    Good times!

Yeah hokcey is hard, particularly if you're trying to pick it up later in life. I just got back into it about a year and half ago after 12 years off and I at least had the fact I played growing up going for me.

Stick with it, you will get better. You'll go through streaks of improvement and then you'll fall into comfort zones and plateau a little, this is when frustration can hit. The best thing to remember is when you start feeling comfortable with something, that's when you need to really push yourself out of those comfort zones and start trying new things, or add a skill onto something.

That's the thing about hockey, there are so many different skill sets (skating/backwards skating, stick handling, passing, stopping, shooting) that need to be learned individually and then tied into the other ones (stickhandling while skating backwards and then stepping into a shot etc.) . Make sure to focus on on all of them and contribute practice time to each.

But as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters. Welcome to the jungle!

Always good to add another player to our ranks. I'm telling you, you'll watch hockey totally differently once you've started playing.

You can watch Doughty and know what he's doing is amazing, but it's totally different when you know, had you tried that move, you would have fallen on your head, broken your leg, torn your ACL, tripped your goalie, and coughed the puck up in the crease. Then you'll notice his incredible poise with the puck, and realize that even when you've mastered all forms of skating, you still would have thrown that puck into the corner or tried to dump it up the ice as fast as possible, while all he had to do was give a little head fake and turn it back around to wide open ice.

Have you ever guessed somebody's gender wrong? There's no recovering from that. You just gotta move on, cause you ain't wriggling outta nothin'.
    "Hey, excuse me, sir?"
    "Maam."
"Okay." "Okay, bye... bye, human. Bye person. Nice to meet you, individual."
