    Default Fractured wrist questions

So, a couple weeks back in a pick up game of all things, I took a puck to the wrist (my dominant hand go figure) and its fractured, I'm in a cast for another 3 weeks, been in for 2 already.

The fracture itself isn't to severe but it is the first bone I've ever broken, and cast I've ever been in so I have some questions, particularly as they relate to hockey. Obviously I could call my doc but I wanted it from people who play hockey and have first 'hand' experience .

    1. In 4 weeks of casting, how much mass/strength/mobility can I expect to lose?

    2. Once getting my arm back, how long should I expect to be out and/or return to form where I feel like I can play again...as far as having enough strength to do what I need to do with my stick, passing, shooting, and bang bang.

    3. Were there any excesices that you found to help get back into form, what were they...I'm just doing the squeeze ball thing right now to limit the atrophy and loss of strength as much as possible.

Please share anything else you found helpful or unhelpful, much appreciated. I'm dying to get back out there, my soul is empty without hockey and I don't want it to take any longer than I need it to.

I sprained my wrist and didn't even touch a hockey stick for about 3 months. It would have only been a couple of weeks but work decided it was smart to have the guy with an hand/wrist brace move heavy boxes.

Anyways, you WILL be afraid to use your hand for fear of messing it up again. Taping it helps. The 99cent store has decent athletic tape. Also use a brace when playing. It helps the hand and your mind. If it hurts, stop playing. Above all let your hand rest.

if your insurance allows for physical therapy, I can't stress enough for you to follow through with it and follow the exercises they give you.

Ya I've been pretty adamant about not letting them guilt me into this. And the doc is giving me a prescription for a badass brace to wear while playing.

Ya I'm looking into that right now, wsn't all that sold on needing it but the more I'm reading and hearing, sounds like it might be the way to go.

Just remember, lots of whacking off will really help you rehab your wrist.

Here lies a problem. If his dominant hand (presumably right hand) is in a cast, and he... ahem... needs to release the pressure, it will be done south-paw style. This only further exacerbates the problem of the emaciated right arm with a huge left arm.

Post cast, yes, said whacking will rehab the wrist. He'll just look like the dude who only worked out one arm in the M. Knight Shamalamadingdong movie "Lady in the Water" right after his cast comes off.

Indeed gentlemen indeed. Doing 'the stranger' has been the overall recommendation but Daxx you certainly brought up an interesting point. I suppose the best solution would be to find myself a nurse?

Have a couple shots of tequila and tape some aspirins to your wrist.
