Any one play the Ice Pickup late Friday nights at the Toyota Sport Center?
If so, how much is it, what kind of a turnout, and level of play?
Thanks

Lots of the Midget Jr. Kings playing like a hot dog session...all they want to do is show off, but there are no girls there. Skated it once, and felt like I did not belong, the kids can be rude
I've never played it but have been to the rink to watch other games on Fri Nights and I'd say spj was there on a bad night. There are all skill levels who play and it looks like everyone is cool to each other. There is usually a goalie or two and only four or five on each bench. You'll get plenty of ice and puck time. It's probably around $15. .
Every rink's pickup games are listed as being for 18+, but the box office only takes money, they do NOT check IDs. So the games have plenty of 15-17 year olds.
I've played pickup at 1/2 the rinks in greater LA and I've never had any of the blue-chip players (teen or adult) verbally give me grief for being a slow-moving-hands-of-stone pylon. In fact, at almost every game I've been to, one or more hotshots takes some interest in giving me some direction/coaching and seeing to it that the puck finds its way onto my stick once in a while. .... Hockey people are the best people.
Im not worried so much about verbal abuse or complaints.
I just wanna know weather players actuallly pass,
attempt to make plays, try to get everyone involved.
There's more of it than I expect, but there may be less of it than you expect. If I was a hotshot, I'd get discouraged too, if I skated hard, faked the D with my stunning toe-drag move, circled the net ..... then had to watch my beautiful pass get flubbed by some old LGK poster named dreaminghewasbobbyorr.
Like I said, I'm grateful for the studs who do involve me in the game, but I don't hold a grudge against the ones who don't. There's a lot to be said for playing at your own level, and public pickup hockey can not guarantee that.
You might want to wrangle your way into private pickup games at your own level. I've endlessly championed John Bryan & Rick Thomas for doing that.
I used to go 2 years ago. It was $15 then (and I think still is). The turn out was 20-25 guys. A lot of high school players would show up and all want to be on the same team -- which makes for an extremely unbalanced game. I just stopped going.
However, this year my league games sometimes end just before the pick-up starts, and it seems like it's gotten more mellow, but the games don't seem as well attended (like maybe 12 guys). But that's the few times that I've passed by and noticed. It might be better to call the box office (310) 535-4400 and ask.
lol. Your forum name is perfect for this thread.
Anyway, I suggest you hit up a couple sessions and if you feel you aren't getting the amount of puck time for the money.. it should push you to work on your game some more during stick and pucks (unless you're just worried about the hogs). I've been seeing a lot of new players (I'm really not sure your level of play) on the boards... but maybe ya'll could organize a meet with some team players.
I play at TSC for rec league but have never done a pickup there.. I'd be interested to meet some of u LGK'ers just for the hell of it,, I could care less to play w/ high school kids but if u LGK ppl decide on doing a pick up, i'd be in....
