I heard people refer to those as "Widow Makers".Stay away from any Itech or Bauer 1400 mask as they are really poorly made.

They were widowmakers in the 90's because of the weak wire that was used. It was also the bogus logic of men who played in high intermediate/advanced divisions (with the shots that go with them) to pay $89 for a face cage who's core target market was kids who were just starting to play.
I have an Itech NV7 2008, frequently take shots off the mask (both off the plastic and the cage), and it has stood up like a champion. So has my husband who sees shots from Pro-Am players on a near nightly basis.
People are just a bad combination of overly cautious and snobs when it comes to the companies that make the masks. Do a little research, try on ALL companies, go with what fits you best... but remember you're investing in your melon. Not the time to be cheap.
For all you goalies who are willing to trek to Santa Ana's hockeymonkey location this friday night. Some info for you:
Bauer Friday Midnight Madness
man...if they sell them on clearance, they can't be illegal!! woowooo! hahaha
Just went down to hockey giant (yeah ruely, don't yell at me haha, my GPS wasn't taking Hockey Monkey's address) and picked up a Reebok 6k chest protector ($214) and man this thing is a bulky beast (but I feel oh so protected). I played with it in a fast paced pickup this am and took a couple hard shots that I didn't feel at all. after the break in period, I won't feel as rigid out there with it, and it makes me realize how bad my old chest protector had gotten after 5 or 6 years of soaking up my sweat.
also picked up a pair of pants (so long to my old cheater bars on the outside lol) and a stick.
totally 1000% agreed. don't go cheap on your cup or your mask. I have that Itech NV7 and love it. I took a really hard wristshot square to my cage and it bent the right eye cage in pretty far (waiting on a replacement cage now) but with one of the cheap masks, that cage would have been buried in my face.
that's because you're using a cat eye. LULZ on that. certified over here... gotta maintain the sexy! :![]()

That's a model I was looking at and glad I didn't get it. Talk about BULK!! I'm interested in your breakin period. I've only played one game in my new protector. Up until then, I'd wear it a couple times a day and work the arms and so forth which got a bit better. A friend suggested to use a spray bottle of water to dampen then wear it to loosen it up that much better. I'm an old schooler that isn't used to the feeling of being totally surrounded from front to back on the ol' torso. Just a weird feeling.
I tried that RBK C/A and just couldn't get used to it. It took too long to break in for me. I have Ersberg's old C/A that I bought at the pro shop in El Segundo. When I get some cash I want to get a Simmons 995 though.
When I start playing again I have my eye on a Vaughn V3 c/a. I too want something that's protective but not as bulky as most of the c/a's out there. I absolutely hate the feeling of being some michelin man out there and I can barely raise my arms. I need a bit more flexibility in my equipment.
oh, and certified cat eye, FTW.
