i'm just going to post in this thread because you asked.
used masks are teh yuck. but then again i'm sorta kinda high maintenance.
whatever fits works.
nice mask you got there for teh kiddie. that's about similar to the kind i used.
good job hoho.
and obviously have no idea about teh sales since you know my situation. ;)
lastly: MUSTACHE RIDE!!!
and i miss teh gifts also. :(
Yea there will be sales but if you look hard you can find discounts and close outs all the time. Discount Hockey/Encore Sports out in Woodland Hill used to have a great sale in August but haven't been invited to it in years...
FYI Discount hockey / Encore sports is no longer off Shuop on Ventura. They are in an industrial area off the 101 in Agoura Hills now.
Do they still have little to no inventory? I'm still amazed they're still in business - a store that apparently sells primarily online, but the prices are like those of your local retail hockey store. They're also not really the local hockey store because they have virtually nothing in the store.

And yes, there are closeouts and discounts all the time. Basically anytime a manufacturer comes out with an updated design, the old stuff gets thrown in the bargain bin. Great way to find high quality stuff at good prices.
I'm not sure where you are, or if you're aware of them, but Hockey Giant (Anaheim) and Hockey Monkey (Santa Ana) have a much better selection of equipment then Encore. Encore is great if you know what you want, but if you want selection, go to HG and/or HM.
I've been hesitant to reply to this thread, simply because I am a goalie that does not ever, under any circumstances, skimp on a mask. I am not going to be a concus'd douchebag because I decided to pay 2000 for my custom reeeb0kkzzz premiere set and my widowmaker (itech 1200) mask.
that said, were talking 2000+ borns
I'd cautiously submit that a combo would be adequate for mite and squirt only.
Beyond that, kids are going to start regularly learning how to get the puck off the ice and have the strength to do it. At that point, its time for a real mask.
Just my two cents.
Oh, and in regards to retailers, in Southern California, there is only one; Goalie Monkey
The best goalie retailer in the world however, in my mind, remains Dukes
They're in Toronto, but when you call them and order something, you're speaking to a goalie. Which in my mind makes a tremendous difference.
Like I said, he is 6 (01) and playing squirts this summer then mites next year when travel starts up again.
I am sure this mask will do fine for a year or 2 then it will be time to upgrade but it is a 1400 not the 1200 model.
been to goaliemonkey.com daily but thanks for the dukes link. that is ONE of the FEW I have not been to so far.
Next up. new pads, glove & blocker. :) but waiting for a clearance model or great package deal. Maybe something like this but in black/white/silver so it can match any team he plays for. or even all white.

Have you tried to adjust the chin cup? You can cut the strap to fit or just make new holes in it so when he gets bigger you can adjust it back to the way it came.
