The reason I shoot left is because I started off playing goalie, I was more comfortable with catching glove on my left hand, the same glove hand as when I played baseball.

I write, throw, kick with my right hand/foot. I catch, swing a bat and hockey stick left.

It just comes down to which ever way you feel most comfortable.

Hockey Giant in Anaheim!! I remembered seeing HGA on TV commercials and been googling to find out the name and location. I'm only 10 minutes from the store so I'll probably check out HG. Thanks SirJW!

SirJW said it best, try to see which way you sweep or if you don't want to use a broom, grab a shovel and figure out which way is more comfortable to heave some dirt. Right hand on top means your left handed and vice versa...left hand on top means your right handed.

I always think of it this way - if you were to reach for something with a stick grasping at the end of it, which hand would you use? If you use your right, you're a left shot.

I do think the US/Canada disparity is easily explained - depends on what you pick up first. If you're a right-handed person, you would tend to play hockey with a lefty stick. Kids who started playing baseball would naturally pick up the hockey stick like they would a bat, with the left hand on top. My first piece of athletic equipment was a hockey stick; I did not pick up a baseball bat until about 12. I shoot, bat, and play golf lefty as a result, although I'm totally right-handed (and footed) - I pretty much do everything with my right hand.

ok, maybe I the weird one here

I swing a golf club, swing a bat, sweep the floor and handle a hockey stick with my left hand on the end. I skate, snowboard and surf with my right foor forward (goofy foot/left handed). So in 2 of the 3 club/bat/stick oriented sports I'm right handed, but I'm left handed with skate/snow/surf?
    WTF?

I write and throw right handed and wipe my tookas left handed. Am I ambidextrous or just retarted?

I don't know that how you snowboard and surf is related to which hand you use for what. I'm righthanded, rightfooted, shoot lefty, golf and bat lefty but I'm goofy too.

Don't get confused by other athletic activities. Catching a baseball (or puck) still demands less coordination than throwing it (or manipulating a goalie's stick to block shots), thus the later is done with the dominant hand.

Don't get confused by the nomenclature. "Shooting left/right" refers to the side of the ice you're skating down for an optimum natural attack to the net. The "left/right" part of "shooting _____" does not = "handedness".

The hand that is lower on the stick is there to act as a fulcrum. The hand that is at the top of the stick does all the work of controlling the blade, and needs the better coordination.

If you're right-handed, then shoot left.
If you're left-handed, then shoot right.
