BYGONE RINKS
This guy pretty much has it correct.
I found this site a while back. Pretty bland of a site,
but informal. From 1970 on, most likely I skated
these surfaces.
Huge thanks to my Mom for taking the time to
drive me to these places.

First time I ever went skating was at North Hollywood. Sad to see it gone.
Great find PTDP!
I played SCAHA juniors at the Brea Rink (Brea Flyers) in the late 70's. Our arch rivals were the Whittier La Habra Polar Kings who wore the Forum Blue and Gold Kings colors. Newberry Park was in our league and that was the first rink I ever played at that had glass installed all the way around the boards. Norwalk was also in our league, didnt even know that rink had closed. I took my daughter skating there a couple summers ago. At norwalk they had the first Zamboni on display there, a converted WWII jeep with a scraper and water nozzles on the back. Norwalk wore the St Louis Blues uni's.
Here's a pic of me at a pick up game at the old Brea rink with it all decked out for Christmas. Found it in an old box of photos at Grandma Jet's house. Check out that Marcel Dionne-esque Cooper helmet! Before they put those nets up, the pucks would sometimes go flying into the Mall Food Court!

Aw yes, the Brea rink. One of the handful of the "Ice Rink
in the Mall" places. North Hollywood, Brea, Topanga,
and Costa Mesa were the ones I remember.
I gonna post a thread called "SCAHA or LAAHA, where did
you play", but since Jets mentioned it, might as well discuss it here.
I grew up playing at Pickwick in Burbank
which I believe was LAAHA (Los Angeles Amature Hockey
Assoc). There were lots teams at that time for both
leagues. LAAHA would eventually merge into SCAHA.
After that merge, the travel got a little crazy. We
would have games scheduled to play teams in Santa
Barbara or Antelope Valley or Costa Mesa on School
nights @ 9pm. I'll try to dig up some photos.
wow this does bring back allot of memories. damn are we getting that old? yeah i remember all the mall rinks too. my first rink was the old van-nuys rink. small and uphill one direction. played for for more than a few along the way... burbank, conejo, culver city.
its not the same now. sooo much more expensive! for "travel hockey" (which is just playing the teams around here like we used to do) is about $2500! ive got 2 boys so dont think that will happen.
i played for the whittier/la habra polar kings from the mid 70's to the early 80's,i remember all the old rinks...klondike,glacier falls, bay harbor, costa mesa..etc.all are gone now except bay harbor..i also coached in scha for ten years for ontario/riverside jets.love the pic of the old brea rink...i believe thats jake tynes in that pic...if it is wow been a long time jake..it's tony chattin here..used to hang out w/richard valero..been a long time..i still play for the oc outlaws for over 20 yrs..some of the guys are old scha players.funny..where does all the time go..very fond memories of old rivalries and battles won and lost on those old rinks.
I had one of those in red! It actually went well with my red team sweater, but the bright green Cooper gloves clashed somewhat.
I remember playing at the Arrowhead outdoor rink, it was colder than a witch's tit. Remember playing at Conejo as well; skated at the NH mall rink, although never played hockey there.
