I use the metric of how much or how little of my thumbnail( the part you would trim anyways ) the blade takes off when I run it perpendicular across the skate. Too little or none at all: time to get em' sharpened.
The other time I was just trying to hide in the box so I wouldn't have to skate.
The rink in van nuys has stick-time friday night at 6:15, I'm gonna go this week and give it another shot. Anybody else want to come?

I used to use Pickwick religiously; there was an older guy, and he would keep an index card with your profile/hollow, etc. I haven't been there in a few years, so I don't know if he is still there.
As far as when to sharpen, when I feel them not grabbing the ice the way I like when I'm turning or stopping, I will take them in. I use a 5/8" hollow.
