Okay, quick beer league question for you guys. Now, I am the captain of my team, and we have had some pretty solid results the last 2 seasons in our beginner league (Championship, and then last game of the finals losing the series 2-1) We lost a bunch of our solid skaters to moving up to a new division so we brought on a bunch of NEW players (like never played a game before and had only taken the Toyota class for 2 weeks). Also, we have a goalie who is a great guy, but coming off of surgery and taking a season off to rehab. Now we have a large bench (17 skaters) and 3 of these guys are brand new, 1 hasn't skated in a while (and I am not worried about him) and 2 others who are fairly new. We have an offer to lose some beginner guys and get 1-2 skilled players. How do you pick those who go, and how do you tell them after they already paid you for uniforms and such. I hate being the bad guy, but know this is what needs to happen for the betterment of the team. Any help would be appreciated

    Yikes, tough situation.

Even though we all enjoy winning, it isn't everything and it is only beer league. I say let those lesser skilled guys play this season out since they've already paid for the season and uniform and then at the end of the season you can say that it didn't work out or something like that. Maybe try to put them up on a wing position with two more skilled guys so they don't really hurt the team too much?

Yeah tough spot but a few things to consider
General etiquette for a captain, don't promise a jersey/crest until the guy is on the team. Harsh to back that out.
If a guy gets in over his level, talk to the other lower level captains and find them a home. Its generally good karma and captains all end up knowing each other anyway. If you're at the bottom level then don't stress it unless the player will be an obvious cancer or never get better.
Be sure you don't need bodies before you get rid of them. Just cuz there's some skilled guys out there doesn't mean they will always show up, and if they are really skilled they will be on someone elses team soon.

I know, about the jerseys. They all signed up, and waited tip the 2nd game to order jerseys. They are nice people, and I don't want to pull the A-Hole card yet (or ever- like you said it is beer league). We are the lowest level, but the guys who run our league even said we need help. We lost our first 2 games by a combined score of 13-2 and were outshot in our last game 42-16. I am all about the fun, hell thats why I play, but satisfying everyone…geez that is the tough part

Wow! That's a tough one. Is there any way the guys managing the league can shift a few guys around onto other teams? The guys who runs our league will do that if we need help. Also, you guys don't have a mercy rule where if you're getting blown out they call it? I know ice time is precious, but getting demolished isn't fun. Personally I'd take the mercy over the ice time.

I would like to take this time to remind everyone that when you're not in the locker room someone else may be. The other sunday while my team was playing, someone went into our team's locker room and jacked my phone and another player's phone. It pissed me off because I had a ton of photos on it that I didn't backup. I know... its my own fault that I don't have the photos.
So unless you absolutely must have your phone on you (i.e. doctor or you're p**** whipped by your wife), leave the thing in the glove compartment or take it on the bench.
The good news is we won our game, though I don't remember much of it because I was friggin' pissed off for the rest of the evening.

We always have a **** bag for everyones phone, keys and wallets to take to the bench. That's a big no-no in oakland. Really sorry to hear that man.

Very ****ty daxx! We had that happen years ago where many bags were hit, cash taken as well as phones. I like jammer's idea of having a bag to bring to the bench with everyones wallets/keys/phones. The Rinks Lakewood does provide a key and the last player out of the room always locks the door, but that isn't 100% fool proof unless you make sure the door to the showers/bathrooms inside the locker room are also locked.

Btw, we forfeited our game on SuperBowl Sunday, which is fine with me since I was sick and we would have only had 5 skaters and no goalie.
