My 3yr old is begging to get out on the ice. For those with little ones when, where, how did you start em off? Skating lessons 1st or straight into hockey lessons (hard for me to imagine him near ice without his stick in hand regardless).

I got the Stewdizzle into the LA Kings "Kids First" program. The gear was free and so was the ice time. He was 5 at the time though.
For what it's worth, in Canada they just put skates on the little ones and put them on the ice. They learn how to skate first and play in leagues etc., later. Let him take his stick with him, it is almost second nature for Nick to have a hockey stick in his hand. Just take him on the ice and let him have fun. Don't worry about lessons yet.
My friend started her nephew skating when he was 2 1/2. Just took him out on the ice. Put him in pre-hockey skating classes at TSC aat 3, and now at 4 he's a Mini-Mite!

I put our son in Kids First when he was 3. Since then, he's been mostly playing roller hockey, but we plan on getting him back out on the ice soon.
For those that have met my son they know he always has a Kings jersey on 24/7, stick in hand and even tries to sleep with his helmet on... full cage and all (seems comfortable???) He takes his "guys" everywhere (Roenick, Yzerman & Vanbiesbrouck action figures). Not my personal choices for toys but what do ya want from a garage sale?
The boy is beyond OCD on hockey, it's almost scary. What 2 yr old knows what channel the NHL Network is and wants to watch that instead of kids programming first thing every morning? I can't get him out on the ice fast enough... no toddler should watch more hockey than Tonga & I combined!!!
Hockey is not a cheap sport to play so my suggestion is...
- Public skate as much as possible (wear the helmet, gloves, elbow
and knee pads) ice and roller.
- Once the kid is comfortable on skates and really wants to go to
the next level, buy the gear and put him or her into a beginner clinic
or league.
- Next step, LGK pickup game, yeah baby!!!
