As anyone who has seen me play can attest, my strategy is just say "**** it" and hope for the best, but in all seriousness, I have been boxing and fighting for years and you learn to tuck your chin in to your chest to protect your throat and keep yourself from getting a wicked uppercut, same principle in hockey. I usually play without any facial protection and have sort of learned to use my free gloved hand (the back padded side!) to help protect my face when i am in shot block mode.
Seriously...Maltese Gel Throat protector.

Mostly worn by goalies, but the fabric he uses is easy on the skin...and you can refrigerate the gel before the game. A really "cool" option for roller.
I use one, and love it. He makes a "collar" only version for players.
From what I've seen, these are damned near standard now in Kids. Obviously, you're not a mite player.. but if it's something you're worried about the small investment is worth the peace of mind, IMO.
