I just started playing recently, and I've bought all the gear I need to play. In the process, I earned a $40 gift certificate through a rewards program. Since I don't need anything else to play, I thought it might be a good idea to grab some kind of backup gear. Aside from picking up another stick, I can't think of much else to get.
Any suggestions?
skate socks, jock, hockey socks, jerseys, maybe a helmet.
I think skaters should always have a light and dark jersey. Other than that, I have no real clue. If you're gonna be playing multiple times a week perhaps an extra set of gloves and/or helmet. Not a big deal during the summer months since things dry quickly, but during the winter putting on cold and clammy gear on sucks.
I wish I had the money to buy an extra mask so I could send my current one out to be refurbed.
I know I have never posted in this forum before, but I have played hockey my entire life and these are some of the "little" things that having extra of are always good to have.
Tape, for sticks and equipment.
Laces for skates.
Sticks.
Water bottles, they get nasty and lost.
If you wear one, mouthpiece.
Pucks.
If you wear something on your head to help control sweat such as a bandana, get extra.
Towels for sweat and wiping visors.
All of the other things listed are great ideas as well, I hope this helps a little.

At this point, I probably have about 4 full sets of everything I can pull out, but when I go to tournaments, I always make sure I bring an extra pair of skates in case the runner / tuuk on my primary pair crack. Everything else you can deal with unless it catastrophically fails
Good posts, pretty much everything has been covered. I like to pick up extra sticks when there are good deals. I usually have a roll of duct thape in my bag for emergency repairs. A lighter comes in handy for fixing tattered skate laces. Bottle opener & small buck knife are somtimes useful.
I'll add
Extra under garments.
Screwdriver.
Tums.
Sharpening Stone.
Bunga Pads.
Laundry Bag.
Soap and Shampoo.
Shower Shoes.
Towel.
Left and right golf gloves for tying your new skates nice and tight, no blisters.
Heat Gun (not in bag).
Scissors.
Considering your newer situation top priority would have to be light and dark jersey, don't get a gray one.
Extra Skate Laces would probably be the number 2
Be sure you have all the pieces for the chinstrap on your helmet, refs require the chinstrap in addition to the face cage (if you wear one) and you never know when it will be enforced
if you start skating multiple times a week I highly recommend multiple hockey jocks or undergarments to cut down on nasty rashes.
Gear wise the only additional gear to check out would be the throat protectors or maybe skate guards if you're concerned.
