the pant shells are good if you wear a girdles under them, pant shells usually don't have padding. It's a lot on preference... hockey pants vs. girdles, coming from roller I'm guessing you're use to girdles so just get a shell to cover them.
oh... and I play at the VIC (Iceoplex panorama city) ... the staff is not bad, it'll run you about $500-600 a season... I think it starts soon. They also have pickup/sticktimes all the time just call to find out when...
Roller equipment would work, but I suggest getting equipment that is sturdier if you can. As for skates I think the usual cut on blades is .5 inch. but some people go less with would give you less "cutting" edge so not as much "grip" on the ice, but unless you have been on ice or really able to move on ice most beginners on ice don't usually utilize the edges until you can actually start to stride and move on the ice.
Thanks for all the information guys. I'll order my stuff this weekend and go to a few free skates/stick times. I am probably going to try pants. If I don't like it, I can go back to my girdle.
Swiss, you are right. I think the next season starts in 3 weeks. If I pick it up quickly I will probably join up.

if you are just starting on ice you may want to start with pickups before joining a league. and do a bunch of stick times before pickup. I play at Valley Ice 2-3 days a week myself. I'm also in woodland hills. Toyota Sports Center is real nice and not much further a drive.
The most common cut for skates is 1/2", check the sticky thread on hollows there is lots of good info there on that.
As for the girdle vs pants it's personal preference but know that roller girdles have less padding than Ice girdles or pants. Go to Hockey Equipment from Discount Hockey. Cheap prices on Hockey Skates, Hockey Sticks, and more. in Agora Hills just to see all the gear and try on stuff instead of doing it blindly online. I haven't been to the new locarion but the old shop in Woodland Hills was pretty good.
Never realized how much Bauer took over! Last time I bought stuff was a few years back and Bauer was never even an option for me.
Ended up with one75 pants and shoulders. I replaced my 10 year old shins and elbows with one55's. I am committed now :ballchain:
