Thought I would ask the locals. I finally moved down here to LA and want to get into ice. I have been playing roller for as long as I remember, but never been on ice.
What is different about ice than roller other than the speed? The little research I have done confuses me on skate blades. What would you recommend for a guy who's 5'10 170?
I am in Woodland Hills, do you recommend any local rinks?
Oh and gear, what do I need in ice that is different than roller?

At your beginner status, just make sure your skates are sharp and don't have toepicks. Even advanced rec players have little concern over blades except minor differences in hollows and rocker, in my experience. You really needn't worry about that.
There are a lot of differences. Speed is one as you note. You can carve very sharply on ice if you have good edges and strong legs. Stickhandling is an entirely different animal. If you fall on ice you can get up without losing much distance to where you were going-- inertia works for you. It hurts less to slide but hurts more to fall flat. When you learn to hockey stop properly you can stop where you want to every time. There are other differences.
Where to play in your hood? I don't know.
Panorama City is the closest rink to you, I think. Iceoplex
make sure you have ice pants and really good shin guards.

Are all rinks around 600 bucks for a season?
Rinks vary in pricing but they all equate to more than 20$ a game. It can be a lot of money upfront. Stick Times are from 8 bucks an hour and up.Quote:

I wish I were closer to YL, it is a little far though.
What are your thoughts on pant shells? Anybody actually wear them?
Do the socks stay up themselves, or is there something I would need to keep them up? Or is tape fine?
Tape is ok but you go through tape which might as well purchase a garder belt for the socksQuote:
