Greens had actual angles and breaks.

See what happens to my score when I play a real course.
I'm nowhere near the golfer you are, but Marshall Canyon is very tough. The greens can be brutal.

    98 at Victoria.

I could not hit a wood off the grass. WTF?!

Gave up hitting the woods off the grass 16 holes in.
    Should have learned earlier.

    There's always gotta be something.

BTW, the difference between Victoria and Alondra is, after a tee shot, at Alondra you have a 100 yard shot in, at Victoria you have a 150+ yard shot in.
Beyond that, there's not that much difference.

HEY, has anybody here seen my wedge game? Seriously. It is gone. Kaput. Over.
I can not hit a shot from 100 yd. in anymore to save my life.

Pitching Wedge, 50*, 54*, and 60* have all gone to ****. Of course, I hadn't played in 3 weeks, so maybe that was it (although it was going away before that...).

    Oh well.

The Sky Course at Lost Canyons is a nice track. Pretty tough. Elevation changes on most every hole, tight fairways, multi-tiered greens, not a lot of margin for error. Once you get into the back nine, you hardly hear a sound.

On 16, while we were on the green 3 coyotes were traversing the hills just above the green. They were also visible in the hills above on 17 tee.

Just a little clue on my luck yesterday. Hole #12, 535 yard par 5, downhill. There is a bunker about 225 yards out, on the right hand side of the fairway. I launch my drive to where is it is just to the left of that banker. I think it is fairway, so I am thinking I am going to get a great roll down the hill. Guess what? Right at that bunker, there is no more fairway. It wasn't real clear on the Yardage book, so I was stuck in some thick rough.

I decide to grab my 3 iron for my second shot just get it down the fairway. Hit the ball o.k., and as the ball was coming down it slams into the 150 yard marker, and rolls back (uphill) almost 30 yards.

When I posted the score, let's just say it came up blue.

Good to hear you're back out there, but yeah, losing the short game sucks.

I chunked a couple today. It's the worst. You're thinking "Eh, a 100 yards to the hole, I'll just hole this one out", next thing you know, the ball is only 20-30 yards closer. Greeeaaaat.
I just think it's a matter of committing to the shot and getting your weight forward and into the shot like any other shot instead of getting too lackadaisical on the 100 yards and in shots.

No One, I'm jealous, I've been wanting to check out the Lost Canyons courses for a while now.

I scored another 98 at Victoria today.

Today seemed better but the score was the same.

It would have been worse had it not been for:

...on 12, I was just beyond the green on the downslope of a hill easily 80+ feet out. The ball was standing up and I just knocked a nice high one onto the green, it bounced a couple times and rolled right square into the hole.

...on 17, a good 50-60 foot putt, knocked it in.

I think I've let some bad habits creep in and I should get back to the range for a couple of days instead of playing.

Every time I think about doing that, though, I just gotta play.

Well, most of the time I am blading them. So I am 90 yards or so, take my 54 and hit it 120. Get close to the green, hit my 60* about a mile or so. The times I am not blading them, I am pushing them.

The Sky course is nice. Very desolate, especially on the back nine. I will check out the Shadow course in due time. I still can't figure out if I like Arroyo Trabuco better, or the Sky course. Maybe it deserves another shot, once I find my game again.

Heh. What I need to do is just take my wedges to the range and hit them. Leave the rest of the clubs in the car.

(I also failed to mention I didn't hit ONE good three wood).

Is that Lake Forest Practice facility any good? And by good I mean like the old El Toro, where you could rent time out there... El Toro had bunkers, greens, etc.. that you could hit from. I never did, though. I always played when I was out there.

    Well I feel bad now...

77 (+6) at Goose Creek. It's amazing what not losing a ball will do for you. As it was, I hit a few poor shots, but mostly recovered well. Got up and down a few times, which was nice. Now I've just got to make a few more putts. A good round could have been a great round if I found the hole a few more times from 5-15 feet.

    As for you guys...

Of late, on those wedge shots I really try to keep my rotation going back and through. I kind of tighten up my arms and my body so nothing's loosey-goosey, and I make sure to turn back to the inside and keep turning to the target on the follow through. My tendency is to come back and through a little too steep and not stick a good finish position, so tightening up and thinking rotation helps me make solid contact.

I'm a big fan of working on a specific thing on the range, but I always need to take all my clubs just to get some kind of variety. Working on the wedges has helped me a lot, recently... The other thing is that I never, ever (unless I have to) practice on the mats. Hitting off of turf, and even hitting off of tees stuck in the ground, is so very different than using the mats. The mats always leave me with bad habits, so I try to avoid them always.

Lake Forest is a bit of a POS. It used to be my "home" practice range. There are some sand traps and you can rent time on them, but the sand was junk and so were the "greens" that you'd be practicing hitting to. The big green was almost always crowded, and was all over the board in terms of speed week to week. Their grass range is kind of small, but I was usually able to get a spot out there. The grass was getting worse and worse, though, so I stopped going there. Hitting off of dirt is not the same as hitting off of grass.
