I played that course once and vowed never to play it again. I was really unimpressed with Nicklaus design on this place, and I think it's ultimately because they tried to squeeze a course into a space that wasn't meant for one.
It always starts bad for me when you have a range where you can't hit driver. Irons only sucks balls. But it does set you up perfectly for the first hole, a par-5 where they force you to hit 7-iron off the tee. What kind of piece of crap place does that??? A place where they carved out a "hole" where one was never intended to be. Then you've got a second where you either have to go for the green or be faced with a blind wedge to a green 60 feet above you. What kind of choice is that???????? Stupid, stupid hole. It must have traumatized me, because when I think about that hole I still get angry.
That entire course was crazy with yardages and elevation. There were at least two times that I hit "perfect" shots that ended up as lost balls because there was no way to accurately judge distance. I understand that some courses need time to figure out, but this place took that idea to the extreme.
Never again.
Anyway, enough of that rant. I need to check this thread more often, and I need to get out there again soon.
Have you ever guessed somebody's gender wrong? There's no recovering from that. You just gotta move on, cause you ain't wriggling outta nothin'.
"Hey, excuse me, sir?"
"Maam."
"Okay." "Okay, bye... bye, human. Bye person. Nice to meet you, individual."

We played Oak Quarry last Sunday with my M.A.G.A. group. I shot 84 and won the 1st leg of the "B" flt championship. Playing Lakewood on Nov 6th for the 2nd round. Hope to do well as the club will pick up the green fees in Palm Springs next April for both the A & B flt champs. Half way there. Greens were not good
So, in the month of November, my game went from GONE to I HAVE NEVER PLAYED THIS GAME before. I lost my single digit. I lost my drives. I lost my approaches. I lost my wedges. I even had a lesson, 15 min at range, 15 on green. The lesson did help my putting. I had 2 rounds with sub-30 putts.
I did play Champions again, and this time carded an 87. Knowing where to hit the ball helps a lot, and I would have scored better but for the 6 on the first par 3, and a 7 on #11, where I couldn't get out of the trap. Please note, I was hitting from with my back leg in the trap, and on my left knee on the grass.
I am off to Hidden Valley tomorrow after a good week of practice. Straightened up my posture, and that seems to help. let's see if I can bring it.
Played Oak Quarry again on Thursday with a bunch of drunks/friends I play with at LA Royal Vista. Shot 85 with a 10! My 8-9-P.W. are killing me. Hitting everything to the right and short. Driver, woods and pitching is keeping me in the game. Can't seem to get on my left side with these short irons. Going back to my graphite Masuno's and maybe drinking more...that always seems to help
It had been 3 years since the last time I stepped foot on Hidden Valley, and man let me tell you.. those ****ing greens... Seriously, there were close to 90 degree breaks you couldn't read. That was the only defense for the course. I was able to hit 10 fairways and 8 greens, which is about 4x the amount I have been hitting the last few months. I posture and tempo did help a lot.
I shot an 86, which was ho-hum, but most of the damage was 3 holes. Took 3 to get out of the trap on #2, bladed a full 58* wedge about 110 yards, when I was 85 out, and misread the wind and elevation change on 16 (par 3) and put it in the cattails and chunked a wedge.. 9 over on those 3 holes.
Did birdie holes 7 and 8. Nearly had an eagle on 7.
So it is closer...... I hate golf.
A -1, just like the Kings lone goal.
I've played that course a few times, it definitely takes some local knowledge. The hole that drives me nuts is 12 where you drive to a fairway that's about 70 feet below the cart path and the hole is path only.
That being said, I just regripped my irons, so I need to get out and use them
Heartwell par 3 course. 78. I'm a beginner.
What hole isn't 70 feet below the cartpath? The one after that, where you can aim for the post on the hill, dogleg left par 4.. they have replaced most of the bunkers in front. In fact, they are trying real hard to make the course a little easier. I have seen places where bunkers used to be, and it is now grass.
