Blue Jackets stun Ducks in OT, take over No. 8 seed in West (Video) (PuckDaddy)
With four games left on their 2012-13 schedule, the Columbus Blue Jackets are somewhere no one expected they’d be: In a Western Conference playoff seed.
The Jackets’ 3-2 overtime win at the Anaheim Ducks, combined with the Detroit Red Wings’ loss at the Calgary Flames, gives Columbus sole possession of the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference with 49 points to Detroit’s 47. Here’s how the game ended:
Defenseman Fedor Tyutin’s tip-in was the difference at 2:19 of overtime, after some brilliant work along the wall by Nick Foligno to set him up.
Previously, the Jackets rallied twice to tie the Ducks. The second time, it was a Matt Calvert goal at 9:42 of the third period to answer an absolutely freaky goal by Dave Steckel to give the Ducks the lead.
It was the second straight overtime win for the Jackets -- Foligno had the game-winner against the Colorado Avalanche -- and the second straight game in which they rallied in the third period. That's remarkable, given they’re one of the worst offensive teams in the final frame.
#Lumbus is now 8-2-0 in its last 10 games. Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves and was solid again.
Can they keep their playoff spot? It’s still not likely. They have four games remaining, and three of them are on the road – at the Kings, Sharks and Stars, before closing out with Nashville at home. The Red Wings have a game in-hand and have three home games. Overall, they visit Vancouver and Dallas, and face Phoenix, the Kings and Nashville at home.
But, even for a moment: Columbus Blue Jackets, No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Dogs and cats, living together, mass hysteria.
